Leadership

As leaders, one of the most frightening realities that we face is the fact that those we lead will inevitably take on a relationship with God very similar to our relationship with God.  It’s a crazy thing to think about! More discipleship is that in making disciples of Christ those following us will take on the characteristics of our own discipleship.  This is part of the process.  We see this in the life of Paul as he instructs us to follow his example.  We cannot and must not avoid it.  It raises the bar for us personally and gives an interesting insight into the leaders we choose within our churches.

You see, the question I’ve begun to ask more than any other as I choose my leaders is this: “Do I want to duplicate this person?” Do I want a dinner group of people who make the decisions that they are making?  Do I want a ministry of people who serve the way they serve?  Do I want people to think of God in the way they think of God?  It’s this question that has begun to really simplify my choice of leaders.  Obviously, we realize that if we are developing leaders, we know that they won’t be where they need to be as they begin, but there are small signs in their life that give you a sense of whether you really want to duplicate that person.

Once you begin to ask this question, I think you’ll be surprised at who you begin to pursue for leadership.
