Something to Remember

One of the greatest gifts we have been given is a gift that seldom crosses our mind.  One of the most powerful tools you have in your walk with God is your memory.  Over and over throughout scripture we are told that it is our memory that will keep us close to God.

This week as our church continues in our Advent Series, we are looking at the fall of Israel and how it was their lack of memory that led them to the point where they walked away from God.  The Bible is filled with a call to remember.  Remember what God has done.  Remember where God rescued you from.  Remember! Remember the crossing of the red sea—remember? David and Goliath remember the victories from slavery.  If you forget where you came from, you’ll forget whom it was that brought you here.

My problem as I walk through this is that I’m not sure very many of us have something to remember.  At least we don’t think we do.  For many of us, our salvation is a story that lacks power not because there isn’t power there but because I’m not sure we can actually see yet.  Our lives aren’t characterized by victory, so we don’t have anything to remember there.  Where are the David stories?  Where are our crossings?  Where is our manna?

Wow, there is no way that the coming of Jesus Christ was meant to bring about less stories!

The problem is that once again in order to have David’s stories, you have to believe God to the point that you actually walk up against a giant.  If no one takes radical steps of faith there are no stories.  If no one leaves Egypt there are no crossings.

This can’t be right, there must be more stories.  We need to once again realize where we’ve come from.  We need to once again realize how angry God should actually be with us.  We need to once again realize how far hope was from our lives and we need to begin fighting the giants in our lives!
