Yesterday I promised more on this question of who I will spend the rest of my life with. Like I said, for most of us the question of God’s will revolves around what our career will be or who we will spend our lives with.
I believe, however, that God is asking a different question and his primary focus and will in your life has everything to do with who you will impact. Whether it’s a career or a mate, I think the question remains the same. God doesn’t lead people to careers, he leads people to people. I believe when choosing a mate, you should be asking the same question. Who is on the same mission to impact the same people?
Erwin McManus once asked his church how they could love God with all they had and still find it possible to be compatible with someone who didn’t believe in God at all. You see, the choice of who you will spend your life with doesn’t have to do with whether you like the same food or the same color or the same sports. It has to do with who you want to impact. If you can find someone who is as passionate as you are about impacting the people you believe God has designed you to impact, you have found something exceptionally valuable. (By the way, if your feelings don’t fall in line with that, your feelings are wrong and YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS.)
I don’t say that to say that your attraction to the person isn’t important; it definitely is. I’m not saying that to say that you don’t need to enjoy some of the same things in life; you definitely do. But when it comes to the priority of those things, the mission is first. The others follow. If you have the others but don’t have mission DON’T GET MARRIED! Start your search by looking for people who are on the same mission. Let it build from there.
