Finding my Career

Almost without fail in our church, when the question of God’s will arises in conversation it’s a question of career or relationship.  What career does God have in store for me and who does God want me to spend the rest of my life with?  It’s just another example of how we take the questions of our culture and add God to the equation.  My parents, my friends, my teachers, my entire world is telling me that these two decisions are the most important decisions of my life and so I need to know what answer God has for me.  Most are shocked when I tell them I don’t believe He has an answer.

You see, I believe God is asking a different question.  God isn’t focused on your career.  He’s focused on your impact.  I believe God is more concerned with who you will impact than where you will work.  I believe you were designed the way that you were so that you could impact a specific people group.  I don’t believe God gave you math skills so that you could be an excellent accountant. I believe he gave you excellent math skills so that you could impact accountants.  I don’t believe God gave you incredible artistic ability so that you could have an incredible career as an artist. I believe he designed you to impact artists.  You see in God’s eyes everything works together to increase our ability to love him more and love people more.

The question for each and every one of us is the same question Paul asks throughout the book of Acts, “Who do you want me to impact now”? The question isn’t what career God has in store for you. Your career will never satisfy you no matter how much you love what you do.  It will get demanding.  It will get tedious. It will consume you or bore you, it won’t satisfy you.  You weren’t created to have a great career.

What will never let you down however is if you embrace the life of significance that God has for you and realize that the gifts and skills that he’s given you were given so that you could impact lives.  When you choose where you will earn your money, choose the path that will increase your impact the most.  That’s the question God is asking.

The interesting thing about this is that the relationship question is exactly the same.  Who will be the best partner in impacting lives?  More on this tomorrow.
