Emphasis

The things that we tend to focus on in God’s communication to us says a lot about who we are and how we understand Him. For example, it’s almost impossible to go to church in America without hearing that you should read your Bible. It is a huge part of how we lead people to seek God. Even though this is never actually given as a commandment. At the same time however, we are commanded over and over to take a day off in our week. Yet this is rarely focused on in our communication. (And I am not saying in any way that you shouldn’t be consistently taking in God’s word. You should. There are several reasons that this was not a commandment including the fact that they did not have a Bible at home.) We cling to the one not commanded and often ignore the command.

It was important enough to make the ten commandments and yet it rarely gets mentioned. What does that say about us? What does that say about our understanding of God?

More and more I’m convinced that our obsession with doing for God is born out of our belief that we are only as valuable as what we can bring to God. This is the heart of religion. It isn’t the message of the one true God. His message has always been and always will be about grace, and you can try to understand that while working seven days a week, or you can obey and allow that tension you feel as you’re sitting at home to teach you something wonderful.

You are worth more to God than simply what you can do.
