I was reminded this morning that God doesn’t always use us as we would expect. As a pastor, I’ve taken various shape and personality tests. I’ve listened to countless conversations on discovering how you were designed and how that should guide you as you seek to serve. I’ve experienced great things with this and I’ve experienced frustration with this. The problem is that God doesn’t always use us as we would expect or in what some would call our sweet spot.
The passage I read this morning reminded me of that in a rather ironic way. It’s found in the book of Nehemiah as the city of Jerusalem is working to rebuild the walls. In the passage we find the names of two individuals working on the wall along with their given skill sets.
Next was Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a goldsmith by trade who also worked on the wall. Beyond him was Hananiah, a manufacturer of perfumes. They left out a section of Jerusalem as they built the Broad Wall.
A manufacturer of perfumes is not going to be my first choice in rebuilding a wall. I would guess that his sweet spot would not be construction. God however often calls us not to what we are perfectly designed for but rather what needs to be done. A wall needed to be built. That takes everyone.
It’s important to know your strengths, it’s important to know how you’ve been designed. It’s crucial to be willing to say yes, no matter what God asks you to do. That is your true sweet spot
